Tulum

A city surrounded by rich Mayan history, built nearby the ruins making it unique. But you guys have asked me a lot of questions…

Where to eat

Kin Toh by Azulik

Not only have an incredible wooden interior design but also the environment and the food. Specially for breakfats.

Casa Malca

One of my favourite places in Tulum full of art and gorgeous views! I recommend the chilaquiles with cafe de la Olla.

Palo Santo

I totally recommend this place for a chill dinner. A fusion of Thai / Mexican cuisine with cozy vibes and the best pad thai in town.

Oishi Sushi

If you want to experience the art of sushi and a good sake you need to try this place. I widely recommend the Unagi roll and the grilled salmon.

Los Morros

This is a very local place located in Tulum town which I consider a secret gem. They have the best seafood tostadas, tacos and soups. Everything is delicious but you have to try the Gober taco and the octopus tostada.

Where to stay

Last time I went I stayed in Town House Mun Tulum hosted by the best agency welkum.mx (you can contact them via instagram or directly in airbnb). It’s a 3 floors house with private pool, 3 ensuite bedrooms and full equipped kitchen. It’s located 10 min by bike to Tulum ruins beach which was my favourite beach to go for a run every day and then lay down by the sea for a couple of hours while meditating. To the touristic sea side is another 15-20 min by bike or 10 by car which is also convenient. It has a big pool, gym and a climbing wall which are shared common spaces in the other houses in the residency.

If you are looking more to stay by the sea side I would recommend Maria del Mar Hotel which I heard is a good option too.

Staying in Veleta it’s also nice but it will require you to have a car or a motorbike if you want to spend most of the time in the surroundings by the sea.

Things to know & advices.

  • Tulum was a port, the only known city that Mayans built on the coast, that was populated by Indigenous people 10,000 or more years ago. “Tulum” means wall in Mayan.

  • It’s sad but Indigenous people are being forced further away from the most desirable areas to make way for foreigners who can afford the high prices. How can give them back? Avoid buying crafts in big shops like super markets where they are usually being exploited. Try to buy directly from them or from shops own by them.

  • The local people salaries who are staff in the hotels or restaurants are too low that I always encourage people to give a tip in cash preferably. Most of the time this is how they make their living.

  • People often ask me if it’s safe? It is! You will see the army constantly around taking care of Tulum security but it also depends what environment you are involved in. There are so many people that go to Tulum for a retreat season and have amazing experiences knowing the mayan culture. Your vibe attract your tribe!

  • If you need any travel advice while you’re in Tulum or any other enquire or emergency you can always contact the Tourist Police: +52 55 4891 1166 (Whatsapp), or +52 55 5207 4155. Tourist assistance line: +52 55 5286 7097.

  • Wondering which airport is closer? Of course Tulum Felipe Carillo airport but If you are landing in Cancun airport you can take the Ado bus from Cancun airport to Tulum which is around £15 or take a taxi which will cost you around £60.
